Well actually to anyone with a critical mother, this is for you!
MILDRED, yes really, I said Mildred, the filmmaker’s mother, is on a scale of 1-10 the bitchtiest Jewish mothers I’ve ever witnessed. She’s funny as hell (most of the time), but more like that scary aunt you ran from whenever she came close to you as a kid. One theme throughout the movie is Mildred’s constant and uncalled for stance on Gayle, her daughter’s, appearance. According to Mildred, Gayle would be swept off her feet if she would get ‘bigger tits and a nose job.’ Fair, no? No! Gayle is 50 years old.
Though funny and perhaps somewhat endearing, Mildred is actually pretty abusive and wildly unsympathetic. This film explores the ever-challenging mother-daughter relationship, and the long lasting bond we’re all searching for.
It’s a bit drawn out but all in all, a fairly uplifting and insightful piece!
